With the holidays finally making their way towards us, this means being able to walk (or drive, depending on how freezing it is outside) through amazing holiday light displays. For a lot of people, especially in Howard County, they make their way to the annual Symphony of Lights in Columbia. Unfortunately, Howard County General Hospital and the Howard Hospital Foundation have announced that the Symphony of Lights will be postponed until next year, fall 2016, in order to have redevelopment of Merriweather Park. This postponement also includes Dazzle Dash, Twinkking Tots, Bike the Lights, and Tail Lights. Although, there will be none of these events this winter, the lights for next year will be updated, meaning that they will be brighter than they have ever ben in the past 21 years of Symphony of Lights.
Many people in the Howard County area are only familiar with Symphony of Lights, and without these lights this winter, they are unsure of where to go to celebrate the holidays. In Howard County, there are a few neighborhoods in Columbia and Ellicott City where some homes go above and beyond classic expectations for home holiday lights. There are always people driving through these neighborhoods in the winter in order to get a better look at these homes, but there are also larger events outside of Howard County that you would not want to miss out on.
Baltimore, Maryland has many light displays that are sure to brighten up the holiday spirit. An event everyone looks forward to is Miracle on 34th Street, located on 720 West 34th Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21211. With the lights turned on the night of November 28th all the way till January 1st, 34th Street displays stunning lights and inflatable decorations for the public. Christmas trees, overhead trains, snowmen, and the “Big Red Lighted Crab” are a few of the many decorations displayed on the street.
At the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in 3001 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008, ZooLights provide the public with a large amount of holiday festivities. November 27th till January 2nd from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM (excluding December 24, 25, 31), ZooLights has live performances, treats, and a mass amount of holiday shopping. With over 500,000 lights, the Zoo is transformed into a winter spectacular of its own.
In the Annapolis Harbor, The annual Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade begins on December 12th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Boats will be displayed along the water along with thousands of lights for people to view along the waterfront. This yearly event brings everyone together to kick off the holiday spirit and enjoy the seasonal display.
These holiday light displays are just a small part of a long list of events that are available throughout the holiday season.
